American idol, a singing competition which doesn’t require any kind of introduction, was premiered in 2002. In its first season only,it became one of the most successful shows and created history in American television. The pioneer of this series is Simon Fuller, produced by 19 entertainments and hosted by radio personality Ryan Seacrest and comedian Brian Dunkleman. The concept of the show consists of finding new and fresh singers. The most interesting part of this series is that the winner is determined on the basis of public voting collected through telephone, Internet, and SMS text. In each season, it always ranked number one in US television ratings. As per the format, the performances of all contestants are assessed by a panel of judges throughout the broadcast. The winner of the show is only eligible for the grand prize.
About Judges: – In first season a panel of judges consisted of Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell however originally it was planned to have four judges in auditions. Later on, in following seasons some guest judges and mentors were also invited to become a part of the panel.
Initial rounds: The competition starts with initial rounds where contestants have to go through 3 sets of cuts. In the first round contestants have to give a brief audition in front of selection team which may have one of the show’s producers in the team. The selected contestants then get an opportunity to perform in front of producers and only then chosen participants can proceed to sing in front of judges and that is the only level of audition which is shown in the television.
Hollywood and Las Vegas round
In this round, the selected contestants are supposed to perform in
Groups or individually in the series of rounds and based on their performances, judges select 24 to 36 contestants for semi- final rounds.
In this show public voting matters a lot.A toll free number for each contestant is shown during and at the end of the performance so that viewers can call or text a message to support their favourite contestants as each call and text message is considered as a vote for that particular contestant.
